Fly like an eagle

Picture
"The most important thing is not the victory but the struggle."
I love a good underdog story; nothing is better than seeing an individual overcome indifference and doubt from their fellow peers and achieve greatness. And with the Rio Olympics nearly upon us, I figured in spirit of the forthcoming event I'd take a look at Eddie the Eagle, the true story about Michael "Eddie" Edwards, a novice ski jumper from Britain who left his mark at the 1988 winter Olympics. Since childhood, Eddie has dreamed of being in the Olympics although he doesn't sport the look of an athlete or carry the attributes of one; his father, in particular, doubts his capacity to compete in any form of sport. One day, an adult Eddie (portrayed hilariously and impressively by Taron Egerton) has an epiphany when he decides to compete in the Winter Games instead of the Summer Games. However, Eddie's
tenacity to compete isn't enough as the British Olympic officials reject him from entering. However, Eddie is not easily dissuaded as he goes to a training facility to hone his skills and qualify, proving to everyone that greatness can come from anybody. Of all the real-life underdog films I've seen in my life, Eddie the Eagle is quite possibly the most endearing. Eddie is absolutely charismatic and it impresses me how he holds his composure with all the crap he had to deal with as a kid and when he was competing. Granted, some elements in the story were partially stretched out but we all know by now that it's for pacing purposes; what stays true to form is Eddie's character as both a dedicated athlete and a lovable character which Taron captures perfectly. Eddie the Eagle embodies everything we love about underdog movies, and is one of the best sports films I've ever seen. Eddie the Eagle soars and gets the gold.
