Who ya gonna call? (Someone else)
If you've read my About This Site page on my site, you know that I make it a de facto principle to never bother with movies that are more than likely to be outright awful. Call it temptation or an unrelinquishing feeling of curiosity, I decided to check out the Ghostbusters reboot, a film that has divided critics and long-time fans around to a point that it leaves in question where the quality of the film ultimately lies. Sadly, this is once again one of those moments where the critics get it wrong which is unfortunate because I truly wanted to like this all-female cast reboot. If you've seen the 1984 version, then you're more or less familiar with what the premise of the film is. Four- ahem, three scientists (still don't know why that trailer said four) named Erin (Wiig), Abby (McCarthy) and Jill (McKinnon) investigate the recent increase of paranormal activity throughout the city of New York.

The trio uncovers a connection between the appearances of ghosts and devices mysteriously placed in parts of the city which amplifies their appearance to cause them to roam all over and create havoc. They enlist the help of MTA worker Patty (Jones) whose knowledge on the city's buildings and history gives them an edge on where to look for clues. The plot is somewhat similar to that of the original classic but everything is.....yikes. I knew the film was going to do things differently but I feel the need to say that this Ghostbusters is an abhorrent and time-wasting reboot that completely desecrates the original in every way possible. Before you start thinking that I'm no different than the other misogynistic naysayers who hated this, my opinion on the film has nothing to do with the leading ladies. I know these actresses can be funny but here it feels like they're not given much to do with the material, especially poor Leslie Jones who basically just shouts every line she has. Speaking of which, this version lacks the witty banter of the original; even the elaboration of how the portals and their equipment works is rushed and dumped on our laps. It isn't a huge problem but it was just something I noticed that original handled with care whereas in this version just expects us to "get it" without proper exposition. There are some humorous moments but this steaming pile is beyond redemption. I gave Ghostbusters the benefit of the doubt after that first trailer left a bad vibe but after watching it, my doubts on the film have been confirmed and is such the worst reboot I've seen and one of the worst movies I've seen this year. Somewhere Harold Ramis is spinning in his grave because of this atrocity; don't do him the disservice of watching this film and avoid at all costs.
