Latest recommendations to stream and watch
2020 is finally behind us but sadly covid has not as we are still steering through the conundrums of quarantines, movies being delayed indefinitely and movie theaters now more than ever going the way of the buffalo. The waters of 2021 remain uncertain but one thing we can say is there's still plenty to watch these days including some old favorites that are being re-discovered again. Below is a revised list of what's available to check out including a few personal favorites from yours truly. And by the way, happy new year everyone!
Superstore
Available on: Hulu, Peacock One of the few shows that managed to stay consistently funny with each season, it's sad knowing Superstore will be ending with its' current 6th one. The show's humor is refreshing thanks in part to the uniquely funny and witfully written characters that make up the cast. In some way, Superstore's departure from tv feels too soon but in the least it left behind a nice history of laughs. |
Close Enough
Available on: HBO Max It's amazing that it's already been 4 years since Regular Show ended but creator J. G. Quintel was already busy at work on his latest project Close Enough. The show leans towards an older audience, this time about a couple in their 30s navigating the suburban L.A. life, but still features the signature animation and off-the-wall humor. With season 2 now assured, now's a perfect time to dive in |
Batman: The Animated Series
Available on: HBO Max One of the greatest animated adaptations of the Dark Knight still remains the best one in my opinion. Batman: TAS set the standard of how cartoons should be done as well as how to appropriately bring Batman's stories to the small screen, a feat later iterations haven't been able to repeat with an exception for Batman Beyond. The true achievement about this show is that it can be enjoyed by fans both old and young which is why it remains the greatest ever. |
Animaniacs
Available on: Hulu Another animated series that got the reboot treatment, Animaniacs embraces the trend and rips on it too while reaping the benefits. The Warner brothers and sister made a welcome return in 2020 and they went right to work making fun of the current times, famous personalities and political landscape. The humor and writing, along with the original voice cast helped kept this series remain zany to the max and with more episodes on the way, we'll have a lot more to laugh about later this year. |
Vikings
Available on: Hulu, Prime The History Channel discovered gold when they decided to bank roll Vikings as it has been one of the betters shows to come out that rivals the likes of Game of Thrones. The legacy of Ragnar Lothbrok just reached its' controversial end as of late with its' sixth and final season which makes it the perfect time to explore the saga of Ragnar from the beginning and how he came to be the King of the Vikings. |
Your Honor
Available on: Fubo, Showtime Any project involving Bryan Cranston always guarantees we're in for something special. Your Honor just started recently but right from the first episode it's already captivating its' viewers with its intense story about a judge covering for his son after accidentally killing the son of a mob boss. Brilliant performances by the cast and a pacing that helps build the drama makes this another instant classic. |
His Dark Materials
Available on: HBO Max The first attempt to adapt His Dark Materials in the form of The Golden Compass was a butchered and somewhat empty version that had too many flaws. This second attempt in the form of a TV series pays more respect to the source material while being more faithful to the story as well. Dafne Keen as Lyra Silvertongue was a genius casting choice, and the visual effects help bring more depth and ambiance to the world that makes the books come to life. |
