Shazam!
-Quickie review, 7/22/19

Shazam's the word

It looks as DC is starting to find their footing given the success of last year's Aquaman, and with Shazam! they're now able to leave behind the gloom and doom that's plagued their films for quite some time, trading it in for light-heartedness and comedy. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) has lived [and fled] from one foster family to another, and on one certain altercation Billy finds himself summoned by the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) whom he has selected as his successor worthy to pass down his powers. Upon receiving his newly inherited abilities and appearance, Billy embraces his superhero persona but not before he catches the attention of Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong), a villain who was rejected of inheriting the powers of Shazam. Between the hilarity of Billy uncovering what his abilities are to the self-awareness humor of DC's own heroes, Shazam! hits solid notes in both comedy and action, finding that right balance between the two. I would say it's on even-footing with Marvel's more comedic entries, and I mean that as a huge compliment. If Aquaman created optimism for the DC film universe then I can humbly say Shazam! comfortably steadies it into a balance that'll make it compete with the big boys. Shazam! is a fun and witty superhero flick that will put a silly grin on your face.
