Hope runs deep
If history has taught us anything, it is that the moment we submit ourselves to defeat is also the moment we've given up all hope; the very weapon that can allow one to overcome just about any obstacle. The true life story of the 33 Chilean miners that were trapped beneath ground for 69 days after the mine collapsed around them was an event that caught the world's attention in 2010. The 33 retells the events as experienced from the miners and the hell they went through as they waited for their rescue. Trapped 200 feet below with little rations and exhausting heat

temperatures of over 90°, there was no possibility of the crew surviving more than three days. However, the tenacity of their appointed leader Mario (Antonio Banderas) helped pull the miners through, keeping them together as well as constantly encouraging them not to give up. There aren't too many films like The 33 that can take a horrific experience such as the one the real miners endured and turn it into a well told and heartfelt lesson of what makes a true leader, the power of hope and the miracles that can happen when one is optimistic even in the most dire of situations. The 33 is one of the rare films that shows that unity in the world is not only possible but achievable as well, an accomplishment no other film this year has replicated. The 33 gets my highest recommendation. and is not to be missed.
